Conditions fish encounter during embryogenesis and early life history can leave lasting effects not only on morphology, but also on growth rate, life‐history and behavioural traits. The ecology of offspring can be affected by conditions experienced by their parents and mother in particular. This review summarizes such early impacts and their ecological influences for a variety of teleost species, but with special reference to salmonids. Growth and adult body size, sex ratio, egg size, lifespan and tendency to migrate can all be affected by early influences. Mechanisms behind such phenotypically plastic impacts are not well known, but epigenetic change appears to be one central mechanism. The thermal regime during development and incubation is particularly important, but also early food consumption and intraspecific density can all be responsible for later life‐history variation. For behavioural traits, early experiences with effects on brain, sensory development and cognition appear essential. This may also influence boldness and other social behaviours such as mate choice. At the end of the review, several issues and questions for future studies are given.  相似文献

The reproductive behavior of six species of tenebrionid beetles (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) was studied in the Namib Desert of southern Africa. In three species, males follow closely behind females (following behavior), while in the other three species, males mount females and remain clasped to them for extended periods (riding behavior). Following behavior occurs before and sometimes after copulation, while riding behavior occurs primarily after copulation. Males of all six species guard females from contesting males, although the effectiveness of guarding is greater in riding species. The evolution of the two male mating strategies does not appear to be related to operational sex ratio differences but, rather, to differential tendencies of females to remate. Variation in total pair duration within following and riding species may be attributed partly to species differences in operational sex ratio. However, pair durations are not affected by experimental manipulations of sex ratio in each species.  相似文献

The material was analyzed on the main problems of genetics of mammalian spermatogenesis, sex determination, its reversion and other defects from the standpoint of current cytological and molecular-genetic concepts of functional activity of the parental genomes after fertilization and behavior of their chromosomes at the early embryonic stages. On the basis of this analysis, a hypothesis has been proposed, which explains a high percentage (50% or more) of early embryonic mortality in placental mammals under the conditions of natural and extracorporeal fertilization, as well as regular appearance of defects in the course of natural sex determination, including the appearance of representatives of both sex minorities. We do not make pretense to comprehensive and deep analysis of male gametogenesis and sex determination in mammals.  相似文献

Frequent independent origins of environmental sex determination (ESD) are assumed within amniotes. However, the phylogenetic distribution of sex-determining modes suggests that ESD is likely very ancient and may be homologous across ESD groups. Sex chromosomes are demonstrated to be old and stable in endothermic (mammals and birds) and many ectothermic (non-avian reptiles) lineages, but they are mostly non-homologous between individual amniote lineages. The phylogenetic pattern may be explained by ancestral ESD with multiple transitions to later evolutionary stable genotypic sex determination. It is pointed out here that amniote ESD shares several key aspects with sequential hermaphroditism of fishes such as a lack of sex differences in genomes, biased population sex ratios, and potentially also molecular mechanism related to general stress responses. Here, it is speculated that ESD evolves via a heterochronic shift of the sensitive period of sex change from the adult to the embryonic stage in a hermaphroditic amniote ancestor. In species with polygynous mating systems, females are regarded as food-limited, while males are limited by access to mates. When local density increases, forage availability declines, while mate access for males may increase due to an increasingly female-biased sex ratio. Density dependence in emigration rates may consequently differ between sexes. Here, we investigate emigration using mark-recovery data from 468 young red deer Cervus elaphus marked in Snillfjord, Norway over a 20-year period when the population size has increased sixfold. We demonstrate a strong negative density-dependent emigration rate in males, while female emigration rates were lower and independent of density. Emigrating males leaving the natal range settled in areas with lower density than expected by chance. Dispersing males moved 42 per cent longer at high density in 1997 (37 km) than at low density in 1977 (26 km), possibly caused by increasing saturation of deer in areas surrounding the marking sites. Our study highlights that pattern of density dependence in dispersal rates may differ markedly between sexes in highly polygynous species. Contrasting patterns reported in small-scale studies are suggestive that spatial scale of density variation may affect the pattern of temporal density dependence in emigration rates and distances.  相似文献

We examine whether among the Barí sex ratios at birth or later ages deviate from the value of one expected by chance. We find no significant bias toward sons or daughters. We also examine whether the costs and benefits associated with sons and daughters are similar or if one sex is more expensive than the other. We contrast our results with predictions derived from Fisher's and the Trivers-Willard hypotheses on sex ratios.  相似文献

Inverted meiosis, in which sister chromatids segregate before homologous chromosomes, is a common aberration of conventional meiosis (in which sister chromatids segregate after homologous chromosomes) and is routinely observed in certain species. This raises an evolutionary mystery: what is the adaptive advantage of the more common, conventional order of segregation in meiosis? I use a population genetic model to show that asexual mutants arising from inverted meiosis are relatively immune from the deleterious effects of loss of complementation (heterozygosity), unlike the asexual mutants arising from conventional meiosis, in which loss of complementation can outweigh the two‐fold cost of meiosis. Hence, asexual reproduction can replace sexual reproduction with inverted meiosis, but not with conventional meiosis. The results are in line with analogous considerations on other alternative types of reproduction and support the idea that amphimixis is stable in spite of the two‐fold cost of meiosis because loss of complementation in mutant asexuals outweigh the two‐fold cost.  相似文献
